I still have iLife 2008 in my Mac I'm planning to install iLife 2011.

But, I've heard of the upgrade destroying photos in iPhoto. Is it safe to upgrade now?

First of all, make sure you have a good backup. Really. I don't care that it's already been mentioned since it is so important. :p

After that, install the new iLife and run software update before launching the newly installed applications. When you're sure you have the latest updates, it should be perfectly safe to start using the applications.

If you have a backup u can try but i will suggest if anybody near you has done the same procedure consult with him :):)
I did some Googling and some people's iPhoto library vanished after an upgrade to iPhoto 9 (in iLife 11)

And does this work?

Install iLife, update and then open iPhoto. Will that not delete my photos?

Since I've read somewhere that updates resolved the issue.

Chances are your photos wouldn't be deleted anyways, but if you do as you just said, updating iPhoto before it's launched the first time, then no, it (almost) definitely won't delete your photos.

*Almost meaning that there's never a 100% guarantee and you should back up anyways, but the specific known bug won't affect you.
