Rumor on the streets is, any MBP manufactured after Feb 2008 will have an exploding GPU.

I would advise you to buy while its still hot.

Actually, around a million at last count.

If you need it, buy; if you merely want it, wait. Is it safe? Safety is such a subjective concept. Once bought - especially if you have added Applecare - you are covered by warranty and/or Applecare should the machine malfunction and you can return it to have it repaired/replaced. I have a wonderful MBP which I bought last April and I'm pretty pleased with it. Cheers
