I want to save some cash and don't need the Touch Bar however im a little timid with all the keyboard news I hear....whats the consensus?

What do you deem as safe? Is the keyboard known to have a higher rate of failure than normal keyboards? Yes.

Is it covered by a repair programme? Yes. Will you have to be without your laptop for a week or longer should you get the issue? Yes.

Can you end up having the issue zero times or even multiple times in your ownership? Yes.

I just bought a 2017 13" nTB from the Apple refurb store and it's flawless. Had it two weeks now with zero issues. And I don't expect any. But if the keyboard does bite the dust (pun intended,) I'm protected by Apple's four-year keyboard replacement program. So I'm good. FYI: I got a silver, 2017 16GB, 256GB 13" nTB MBP, and it's a little powerhouse.

Slower wifi and dual core, but if you're good with that I'd certainly consider it a good option.

I’ve had a 2016 nTB for over two years now and use it as my main machine. Zero issues with it and have been very happy so far. I plan to keep it for at least another two years.

Just to keep the same theme alive, my spouse has the exact same machine and her space bar has been half stuck for the last year and we still haven’t been in to fix it since she works around it with an external keyboard and monitor.

YMMV with these current keyboards.
You’ve been warned.

I have a 2017 tb 13 and the keyboard is awesome. It's a great laptop. It has a 4 year keyboard warranty so your in good hands

Note that 2018's (which he may be thinking of buying) are *not* covered by Apple on that extended keyboard warranty/fix situation (at least not so far).
