Formerly I just ignored my contacts list as every app was able to get all the info stored there and I didn't want to risk my friend and family are spammed because I have them in my list.

I heard they would fix it in iOS6. Did they? Do I have to change any settings for preventing apps to read my contact list?

New apps will ask if its ok to access your contacts.

Thanks, do I read this as "Old apps can still access my contacts without asking" or "It is fixed, no need to worry any longer"?

mmm I would have thought the update would have kicked in some authorization process? not sure though.

I restored.

Old apps will be prompted freshly since no choice is recorded for them.
