Is it safe to use my dock to charge up my iPhone 4s?

You can use it, for sure...

That is why I love Apple, you do not need different plugs etc. for any other version

But everything else uses USB! Even Apple are now selling an adaptor.

The adapter is an European requirement to allow all phones to be charged with a micro (or mini?) USB plug on the device.
