to shut the lid of my macbook and then replace the battery. I just did it but by accident. I forgot it was on and replaced the battery and when I opened the lid again a little load screen showed up and everything was the same as when it was on. Even the programs that I was using. I'm guessing this is a feature but I wanted to make sure it was safe.

Thanks for the info, but is it safe to do?

It's a feature. If you want to carry a spare battery on a trip, when the first one runs out you can just swap it for the second one. Without restarting.

This has been a feature on Mac notebooks for a long time.
