I read from a recent MacRumors article that "Apple is keeping one-time AppleCare+ purchase options available in its online store for the time being, so customers who prefer buy a non-renewing AppleCare+ plan that expires at the end of two years can still opt for that." However, I cannot find any way to purchase it. When I bought the phone, they said I could still buy that plan online.

Spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple. The answer is you can still buy a 2-year upfront plan, but only with theft and loss (in the US). Extended warranties have always been a doubtful proposition, but I felt AppleCare+ just provided value enough. But now Apple just wants to squeeze as much revenue out of this as they can. So, first time without AppleCare+ on a phone.

AppleCare saved my rear a couple of times in the past and allowed me to avoid Apple’s hefty out of warranty repair fee. So I’ll continue to purchase AppleCare for products I care about most, like iPhone iPad Mac.

I agree. But I do not want to pay for theft and loss.

SquareTrade or other 3rd party insurance, then.

I presume Apple's done the accounting and decided they're better off not offering non-T&L plans in USA. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ vote with your wallet!
