I got my iphone 6 on launch was wondering if it's to late to purchase applecare?

That's for AppleCare+
The standard AppleCare can be purchased before your original 12 months warranty expires.

( And, of course, I have been corrected - only AppleCare+ for iPhones  )

I am not sure if it's the case in US but in Hong Kong Apple wiped the option to purchase apple care for iphone.
Left only Apple Care + to choose from.

Same in the US, as far as I can tell. If you click on AppleCare on Apple's site and then on iPhones or iPads, AppleCare+ is the only option, and it does have to be purchased withing 60 days of the device purchase.

Unless you're thinking of the AppleCare offered for laptops and desktops, or you have some sort of "in" with Apple, the only extended warranty Apple offers for it's handheld mobile devices is AppleCare+. A+ can only be purchased within the first 60 days.
