Is it true that Apple is blocking other map apps from incorporating driving directions in your car's HUD? I have just ordered a new Lexus NX, and I have recently learned that the driving directions from Apple Maps show up in the HUD. Supposedly Apple is blocking this feature from other maps. Can anyone confirm this?

Apple isn't blocking anyone. If you use Apple's own CarPlay connectivity suite, it only supports Apple Maps. But they're not blocking you from using Google Maps through AndroidAuto. It's up to the car manufacturers to choose to support AndroidAuto or not.

Ahh I have used Apple Maps and Google Mapping on both my truck and car using CarPlay. I also think that there is also an another mapping app that is also supported.

I think the prior posters are referring to the fact that CarPlay supports other map apps, which is definitely true, but may be missing your question as to whether other map apps show up "in your car's HUD." On my BMW, I can use any CarPlay-capable mapping system (Google Maps and Waze are the others I've tried) in the CarPlay window. However, only Apple Maps also provides information to the car's HUD; for example, displaying turn-by-turn directions on the main cockpit display behind the steering wheel and on the heads-up display (HUD) on my windshield.

I don't know whether that's due to an Apple restriction or not, but I think this may be what OP was asking about.

That's the thing only Apple Maps works in the HUD. And supposedly Apple is blocking this functionality from other apps...

That's not true. I've been using Waze in Carplay for several years.

Source? As far as I know there is no common API which map apps use so that the car would know to display "right turn in .2 miles" on its HUD. CarPlay and Apple Maps would know how to communicate with the HUD as that is an important component of Carplay. If Google Maps, Waze, or whatever are speaking different languages running in Carplay it's not Carplays' responsibility to translate them. Apple certainly wouldn't be interested in translating for the HUD, which is totally different than actually blocking them. Would be nice though.

But what do I know, just speculation here.
