Is It Workable, New iMac boot from ext SSD?

I've been waiting in the wings to get a new iMac. But I need to buy from a store where I have credit and while they sell the new iMacs with the Haswell Chip, they don't sell any with Fusion Drive.

So, if I were to a buy an ext USB 3 SSD, can I boot from that?

Yes.

I had some issue with OS 10.8.4 but that was resolved with the USB update included in 10.8.5. It works perfectly well with 10.9.

Essentially my USB external boot drive was being ejected when my iMac went to sleep... Woops.

But all is well now. I have a SanDisk 128gb SATA III SSD in an external USB3 case and it's a beautiful thing.
