Does it make sense to have more local storage on a computer rather than less? Sure, for some.

I guess that depends if you have 1tb of data and content that needs to be stored locally?

I remember when the iPad Pro 1TB models released in 2018, it was the first Apple device with 6GB ram.

Do you think the 1TB iPhone will have 8Gb ram?

Besides, the extra storage will come in handy for cinematic recording and the 4K recording. Right?

I'd base the storage size of your next iPhone on your current iPhone.

I'm currently using less than 32GB on my 64GB iPhone 11 Pro Max that I renewed on November 2019.

The base 128GB 13 Pro Max will allow me to transfer all 32GB of data to it rather than just excluding the photos & videos in the Photos app like what I've been doing since 2007 with the first iPhone.

I'd probably go with a 1TB iPhone Pro Max when it becomes the base model by mid 2030s. Hopefully it will still be $1099

Not sure if this is tongue in cheek, but raises quite an interesting point. Do you reckon it would be that long until 1TB is the base model? Judging by the time from when a storage tier is introduced as the highest, to when it filters down to become the entry level, in the past we have

64GB:
2011 - introduced (iPhone 4S)
2017 - base storage (iPhone 8/X)

time from highest to entry tier = 6 years

128GB:
2014 - introduced (iPhone 6)
2021 - base storage (iPhone 13)

time from highest to entry tier = 7 years

I suppose given that 256 and 512 still have to work their way through, it could well be a decade or more before 1 TB is base storage

I strongly believe the iPhone will cap off at 1TB. I can not see Apple going for 2TB on the iPhone. The storages we have now, will be it for a LONG time.

On an iPhone 13 thread I expressed my disappointment that Apple did not make 256GB as base storage. Then someone replied that it will take another 5 years from now for it to happen.

So I did a bit of digging and noticed that Apple doubles base storage every 4-5 years.

Below are the base storage every year of various iPhones

4GB
  1. 2007 - 1st
8GB
  1. 2008 - 3G
  2. 2009 - 3Gs
  3. 2010- 4
  4. 2011- 4s
  5. 2013- 5c
16GB
  1. 2012 - 5
  2. 2013 - 5s
  3. 2014 - 6 & 6 Plus
  4. 2015 - 6s & 6s Plus
  5. 2016 - SE
32GB
  1. 2016 - 7 & 7 Plus
64GB
  1. 2017 - 8, 8 Plus & X
  2. 2018 - Xr, Xs & Xs Max
  3. 2019 - 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  4. 2020 - SE, 12 & 12 Mini
128GB
  1. 2020 - 12 Pro & 12 Pro Max
  2. 2021 - 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro & 13 Pro Max
Tuesday's iPhone is the 2nd year 128GB base storage was offered. This is the 3rd year Samsung offered a 128GB base storage for its flagship model. I remember this as it was my sole complaint with my 64GB iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Today I use 30GB out of 64GB of my 11 Pro Max. I should have transferred all 16GB of data from my iPhone 6s Plus to it. My 11 Pro Max would then use about 50GB by the time I migrate to a 128GB iPhone 13 Pro Max. 6 years of data in my hand!

So by 2024 or 2025 it is expected that iPhones will get a 256GB base storage.

2029 or 2030 will be when 512GB will be base and 2034 or 2035 will have 1TB as base.

1TB on any smartphone may sound outrageous today but consider shooting 4K ProRes Video Requires iPhone 13 Pro With at Least 256GB Storage.

1TB for a phone is overkill in my opinion, more so if you only planning on keeping the phone a year. But that's just my take everyone has their reasons :). Like if you plan to do a lot of 4K video recording or store a lot of pics and other media and apps, it will be worth it. But at the end of the day it's your money. If you want it go for it!
If Apple catered trade in value based on strorage (like Mac trade-in) I’d go 1TB in a heart beat. I bet you this time next year, your 1TB iPhone will get you $800.

It’s probably a waste of money if you won’t use the extra storage. I don’t know of any other benefit to getting the extra storage if you don’t have content and apps that require that much storage. I’m getting the 1TB because my photos and videos are greater than 512GB and I want to store them all locally on the iPhone.

I was thinking about it, since I use my phone for everything and commute plenty.

but then I looked at my phone and realize I’m using less than 50GB, more specific 43.2 of 256 and have almost 40k in photos and a couple hundred in videos.

yeah, it’s tempting because you get so much more storage for a couple hundred or so but I don’t use it so…

I got a 256 again with apple care plus and called it a day.

I don’t resell my phones either.

I'd read that ProRes footage file size breaks down to about 4GBs per minute so consumers who are looking to use that feature regularly should take a hard look at the 1TB option. 512GB minimum IMHO.

Yes, if you intend to use ProRes a lot in your usage then it is safer to get 1TB. ProRes + Cinematic Mode is the only reason why Apple decided to release a 1TB option.

Usually they don't increase the storage options but if they did introduce a 1TB storage option then there must be a logical reason.

Wondering if 1TB storage model has more onboard memory as well? May be 8GB? We will never know until someone teardowns a 1TB model.

I really don't know how much data did you store on your current iPhone?

it would be real nice to have 1TB only if the iPhone have USB-C or TB3/4 because it will be fast data transfer....lighting cable is far too slow to transfer data.

I have only bought base-storage devices for the past few cycles since iCloud became such a seamless part of my system. Both my iPad pro's are only 64gb and I get along fine with them. I ordered my iPhone 13 Pro Max with 256gb only so I can play with ProRes 4K. The new devices with 5G make cloud storage "almost" local.

Having said that, if you are someone who shoots actual video production on your phone, or tries to edit large videos on their phone, then max storage might make more sense.

I check my iPhone 12 pro and I'm using 99gb of storage, so the iPhone 13 pro 128gb is more than enough for me.
