I have a friend thats willing to sell his 13 inch to me for around 500. The thing im debating is it even worth it to buy this computer or get the newest one? I am looking to edit videos on fcp.

is it worth to get a 08 model mbp 13"?

As there was no 13" MBP in 2008, only the 13"MB, as the 13" MBP has been introduced in June 2009, I would not get it, as that 13" MB from 2008 lacks one important port, the Firewire 800 port, which comes in very handy, when you edit video as it allows for transfer rates of up to 75MB/s and USB only has 30+MB/s.
Also the display was a bit of a crapshoot with that model and you had less battery life, the only plus are the two dedicated audio ports, one for input, one for output, as the 13" MBP from 2009 only has one shared port.

The 13" 2009 MBP for 500 USD is a steal and is sufficient for your needs. Just make sure everything is okay and that it still has warranty or Apple Care (or you can at least still purchase Apple Care).
