Compared to the Earpods and Airpods

And for both iPhone and iPAD (assuming both Apple devices are technically the same)

How would you rate these (598 SR) and similar Sennheiser headphones?

I mean, in terms of volume levels

Lower or higher?

You’d need an amp to drive those properly from a phone. It will not be loud and will be lacking in the audio quality they can produce as well.

Volume levels would be louder with earbuds.

I only have a vintage ipad 3, and I use HD558s, so my impressions might be a little whacked. Plus, I'm in a quiet room. (the Sennheisers are open back.)

But, they'll sound loud with the volume turned up to 70-80%. They won't sound amazing. They won't sound like anything special They won't sound ultra deep.

In this respect, better than Grado SR-80s, which need a lot of power for the deep stuff, and sound mediocre on my ipad. But not really anything to get excited about, unless you have some sort of amp (and my only amp is non portable, so I can't help you there).

I just read that the Sennheiser 600 is a lot more comfortable than the 598... one reviewer said that, the guy seems to know a great deal about headphones, but he also said it doesn't matter if EVERYONE says the 598 is comfortable, I might disagree with others like he does, since it's all subjective. (I hate when someone says that, I am that kind of guy that is eager to find flaws).

At the same time he also hinted that HEADPHONES like the Sennheiser will need an amp and the Earpods will sound much better than them if used in these Apple devices. Since I haven't tested I can't tell what it sounds like, yet this (much like the comfort they can offer) is very important to be known if someone wants to ditch the Earpods for a better product... Either most people are lying, can't judge this properly or this guy is full of s...

The HD598’s are super comfortable mainly because they are so light. I’ve had them for 6 years or so. They are very neutral, slightly bass anemic but are relatively easy to drive. You could probably get away without using an AMP on them. The 600’s will require an amp.
