I have a very old wired Apple mouse with the little ball in the center that scrolls, but it doesn't work anymore and I'm considering getting a replacement but not sure if I should get the Magic Mouse 2.

I have the original Magic Mouse that uses double AA batteries, and I know the new one is rechargeable. Besides that are there any major differences between the 2?

Definitely not. Worst ergonomics of any mouse. I just don't understand what the problem is with Jonny Ive's team. 20 years later, how can they still not have the capability to design a mouse that's simply comfortable and ergonomic to use?

I don't think it is very good. I personally prefer trackpad. If you need a mouse, Logitech has much better options. Any MX series mouse is miles better than the Magic mouse.

Going against the majority, I actually don't mind my Magic Mouse 2... Other than the charging design, however if you leave it charging overnight whilst the computer sleeps then it doesn't need doing again for a long while - same with the keyboard.
Some people don't like the feel of the mouse, and I can appreciate it may not be the most ergonomic option out there, and it's not the cheapest either, so if buying stand alone - I would probably recommend a different one that would be cheaper. However if it comes supplied with a new computer, then it's not terrible IMO.

Personally, after 30 seconds of using the Mighty/Magic mouse, I want to scream and throw it across the room - its horrible to hold, doesn't support your palm and using the gestures is like trying to do a Vulcan salute. Via colleagues I've found the Magic Mouse 1 (with the AA batteries) to be unreliable - problems with the battery terminals - and (as others have said) the charging arrangement on the Magic Mouse 2 is hysterically stupid.

Question is, though, do you like using the Magic Mouse - because the important thing about a mouse is that you, personally, are comfortable using it as a mouse - and that's highly subjective. If so, I think I'd reluctantly go for the rechargeable MM2 over the MM1 (and try and remember to plug it in when I took a break).

Best thing, if you get a chance, is to find a store with a range of mice on display and pick the one you like the feel of most.

The Magic Trackpad 2, however, is great for general use (my tip - go into 'accessibility' and enable 3-finger drag - its transformative) although I find a couple of things (some games, graphics work) still work best with a mouse. Maybe try one of those, and stick with your Magic Mouse 1?

I use a mixture of Magic Trackpad 2 and a Logitech MX Master mouse.

If you like the ergonomics then sure, why not. The battery lasts forever, which somewhat mitigates the utterly braindead stupidity of the charging port location. However, keep in mind that the design is completely different from the older more bubbly-shaped mice so you may want to try it out in a store first.

Try a non-Apple mouse, such as Logitech.

I haven't used Apple mice or keyboards since the "ADB days"...

I use a cheap Dell Wireless mouse and keyboard. The design is meh, but they function extremely well.I tried the apple magic keyboard and track pad, Id say save your money.

Most important though is that it has to feel good to you.

Magic mouse 1 gave me tendonitis of the worst kind. I didn't figure it out for about a year, and I had to switch to my wacom tablet for 2 weeks once in a while to let my tendons recover. Its horrible ergonomics for anything more than causal use, but I loved the touch surface and gestures. I finally got a Logitech MX master and its a dream. Expensive, but soooo nice to use. I dont' miss anything about the MM now. I hate that I spent a year in pain before I figured it out.

So much this. It didn't even take a few days until I could feel my tendons straining. Just thinking about that mouse makes my hand ache. Absolute terrible design as far as I'm concerned. I switched to a Logitech m510 and I'm on the same batteries after several years.

To be honest I'm surprised Apple hasn't been sued over the ergonomics. It's an absolute disaster.

Magic mouse can be scroll horizontal and vertical. My hand kinda small,so my palm keep touch and the mouse keep jumping because the mouse think it was touch. I also have try some suggested application to prevent this issue.

I still use the magic mouse for vertical scrolling .

Left - magic mouse
Center - magic keyboard
Right - logitech mouse.

If wanted to said it worthy, maybe no for me.

The only thing I like about the Apple MM is because its look and how it blends in with the whole setup. Asides from that the mouse feels terrible in my hand when using. I've never liked the feel of any of the mice that Apple had to offer.

With that being said, could you guys recommend a good mouse with ergonimics as well as looks that will closely match Apple's style? I can't seem to find one.

The Magic Mouse certainly takes some getting used to but once you have mastered the ergonomics and gestures it is great. Certainly one of the most comfortable mice I have worked with.

I fully agree with @loybond. Logitech's MX Master 2S is a revelation, that is if your hands are big enough. Some women with smaller hands may run into problems with this mouse, my wife is one of those. Unfortunately, while the Master MX2 is an amazing mouse looks butt-ugly and utilitarian rather than drop-dead gorgeous.

I think you have to pick function over form in this case. Apple has been known for many years now to be picking form over function regularly, which resulted in ergonomic abominations such as every single one of their mice.

I don't care about a mouse's "style".
I care about how it WORKS.

Same for keyboards.
My keyboard is "ugly", compared to those from Apple.
But mine works better -- at least for me.

There's really not much choice in "Apple colours" - personally, I couldn't care less whether my mouse matches the computer. If cosmetics are important to you then I suggest giving the Magic Trackpad a go.

Mouse-wise, I'd also recommend the Logitech MX Master - just hide it and leave your old magic mouse on the desk when the Style Police come calling - although, as I already said, mouse preferences are subjective and the MX Master is quite extreme (I guess it would also be useless to left-handed mousers).
