Since updating to iOS 18, Mail has been fundamentally broken for me—and from what I’ve seen, I’m not alone.

Whenever I try to view older emails, the content takes an age to load, and the only reliable workaround is to force close and reopen the app. Reinstalling Mail hasn’t helped, and the issue persists across all my iOS and iPadOS devices.

Has this finally been addressed in iOS 26?

I have my own server. They are standard IMAP accounts and for the past 10+ years everything has worked fine until iOS18. The only system change has been iOS.

Apple Mail is engineered for iCloud Mail. I recommend you switch to that. iCloud Domain hosting works really well with full DKIM and DMARC support. Put your email domains on iCloud and you'll enjoy a seamless email experience across all your devices.

The issues still persist. Randomly. Content takes a lot of time to load regardless of whether you're using an iCloud.com email or a custom domain hosted at iCloud or some other service. And at other times it loads flawlessly.
Turning off Mail Privacy Protection speeds it up a bit. At least the attachments load a tad faster. For what it's worth, iCloud private relay doesn't seem to hamper my internet speeds much. I average around 960-970Mbps on my internet connection with private relay on and around 980-990 with it off.

The notifications are still not synced amongst all my devices for my iCloud email(and the custom domain using iCloud.) Fastmail worked with Apple and they have the notifications properly synced while using the Apple mail client!

It's been just fine for me so I wouldn't know. Not had any of the problems you've been having, even once.

It’s a strange one. There must be something slightly different in my setup (and clearly in many others too). I haven’t touched my email settings in over 10 years — they’ve always worked perfectly and still do on my Mac.

But on iOS and iPadOS, Mail often gets stuck when downloading messages, both new and old. The only fix is to close and reopen the app, which can get really frustrating.

Deleting and reinstalling the app or accounts doesn’t help either. This all started with iOS 18.

and just maybe this is your problem.
It isn’t just my problem. Google search’s is FULL of this issue. There are many threads on this forums about it and this is what ChatGPT has to say…...

its always the few that are the loudest...my point is you stated that you have your own mail server AND you haven't touched your setting in 10 years. This is where id look first, in 10 years a lot has changed.
I have dozens of devices connected to multiple email servers and have never experienced these issues...so id suggest it's time to look at your server and settings, thats all.

Why am I being LOUD? It’s a forum. I’m coming here for help. Thanks for yours.

I didnt say YOU were loud...It's "always the few that are loudest" meaning when a small group of people have issues they seem much bigger (or louder) than the problem really exists. For every single person here that complains about an isolated issue...there are thousands that dont have the issue. Nobody comes to a forum to praise their software for working.

How do you do that? I have yahoo, gmail and optimum.net accounts. The optimum accounts do not work well.
