I'm holding off upgrading to iOS 16 until I get my new 14 PM, but was wondering if Mail.app on the iPhone, with iOS 16, is better with Gmail? I want to discontinue using the Gmail app, would like to go native, but in the past, it didn't always work 100% well. Has this changed for the better with iOS 16?

i haven’t used the native app in years but does it offer push emails? i remember a long time ago apple removed it.

Dont get Push with Gmail via the native app unless you pay for it from Google, it was Google that removed it from non paid for accounts rather than Apple stopping it working. If you had it then it worked until you changed device or reset your device and after that it didnt work any more.

I've always used the native app just because it was baked into iOS for clicking things and with it just being a personal account i was never desperate to see emails the second they landed in my inbox. Also i'm generally at a PC all day at work and have Chrome running with an extension that checks and notifies of any new email anyway.

That sucks. But thanks for explaining something I was going to ask!

I've been using Gmail on my iphone 12 for about a year now because I hadn't been reliably getting Mail notifications using the Apple Mail app. The Gmail app would always notify me even when the Apple Mail app did not.

Now that I have updated to IOS16, I find that for the first time in years, I am reliably getting Apple Mail notifications. I have turned off Gmail notifications and will delete that app altogether in another couple of days once I am satisfied that Mail is still reliably working the way it is now.

I've always preferred the Apple Mail app over Gmail as it shows my different email accounts in a better, more organized way, and everything seems to be formatted better when viewing emails using Apple Mail on an iphone as well. The only thing I DON'T like about the Apple Mail app is that when using Gmail accounts, there is no push, only fetch (as mentioned above). But they can be set to fetch every 15 minutes, so I don't consider it a major issue.
This is the first IOS version that I have used in years that so far, I have had absolutely no issues with. It's about time.
Thank you Apple.

Mail always disappoints so just give it time ha. Don’t forget that synchronization between devices never worked properly either constantly showing outdated numbers in the badge icon.

I've been using GMail with the native app since iOS 5 or 6. I don't recall ever having issues with it. Besides the rare need to fix a password problem.

It sucks. Gmail hasn’t worked properly with the native mail apps on my iPhone or all three of my macs for the last month or so.

Really disappointed to come back to iOS for the first time in years and realise this is still an issue.

The Gmail app is pretty fugly, but I don’t want to wait on notifications so there doesn’t seem to be a workaround

Just use Spark. Their mail app is lightyears ahead of everything else.

Using it so far on my new install on iOS 16. Seems to be working perfectly fine so far, except notifications are a bit delayed/buggy. Wish the native Mail.app application supported push notifications for Gmail.

Thanks all!

Reporting back — after a few days trying Mail.app with Gmail, it just didn't work out :\ I really liked how "native" Mail.app feels, but the delayed notifications and a sent message that never actually sent made me realize that, despite how annoying Gmail.app is in some ways, the native integration it has with Gmail (notifications, threads, etc) made it too good to not use.

Frustrating and disappointing — Apple not offering push notifications for Gmail in their native Mail application isn't exactly their fault (upthread someone said that Google was the one who decided not to offer it for Mail.app), but the inconsistent nature of how fetch works (sometimes email shows up 2-3 hours later) and bugginess just doesn't sit well with me. Email is still an important tool, and it's disappointing how Mail.app doesn't really deliver very well for Gmail. It works amazingly well with @iCloud.com mail, though.
