I've never own an iphone before. The iphone 4 was bought from ebay and the seller said it was fully jailbroken and unlocked. I don't mind the jailbroken part but is it really unlocked?

It's on the home screen with NO SIM sign. I can do anything just like using an ipod touch. The apps are all from apple and there's NO cydia. When I go to settings-general-about, it says the Carrier AT&T 7.0:confused:

Is it still being locked to ATT or is it already unlocked in some other ways?

i'm afraid to cut my tmobile sim:(it'll take a few days for a replacement sim if that doesn't work for some reason

tmobile.....But I want to make sure it's UNLOCKED so I'm more confident to cut my sim. (may sound silly though)

Well no matter what you can just jailbreak and unlock it right now.
Try your T-Mobile SIM, and if it says "invalid SIM", then jailbreak and unlock it yourself.

if theres no cydia on your springboard the chances of it being unlocked/jailbroken are low

IMO the seller prob. just popped his sim card out and then sold the phone as is

There's no sim at all. He sold it saying it's fully jailbroken and unlocked. btw he's a top rated seller. I guess I'll just have to e-mail him.

BTW, my tmobile sim was more than 5 years old. Some random people on the net said it won't work if the sim is too old (doesn't support 3g or something). Should I be trimming it down anyway?

I'm sorry for asking too many questions.

Whether or not the SIM supports 3G doesn't matter--the iPhone is incompatible with the T-Mobile 3G frequencies. You will never get 3G signal from T-Mobile on any iPhone.
And, if you try to cut your SIM and fail, you can always go to T-Mobile and get a new one, I doubt that they would charge you.

Does it mean it's not unlocked? inside is my trimmed t-mobile sim:(

this is what you need to do

go to jailbreakme.com and jailbreak your fone

then in cydia download/install ultrasnow

make sure that you go into settings and you turn off 3g b4 running ultrasnow

after that everything should work fine

It's getting even worse now. INVALID SIM, SIM FAILURE.

I paid for an unlocked iphone but now I have to unlock it myself?
Why would I pay the extra in firsthand?
Alright, I'll just return and get my refunds. That's really sad.

Thanks for all the answers and suggestions.

Go to settings/general/about tell us what version firmware are you on.
It only takes a few minutes to JB and unlock it if you dont want to go thru the process of returning and getting a refund.
By the time you made this thread and responded you could have gotten it JB and unlocked yourself if you're not on 4.0.2 already.

It's so easy a chimpanzee could do it.

Do you really want me to tell you why?

Sad indeed.
