Is my 5s unlocked?

Hello. I purchased my 5s on launch day. Being bored at work today, I was just searching around the internet and came across an imei check to see if your phone is unlocked. Being curious, I did it and it came through as my phone being unlocked. Is it possible to buy an unlocked phone through a carrier using an upgrade? The last line says it. Thanks for the insight.

Yes it's possible if it's the A1533 Verizon one ( subsidized and unsubsidized Verizon 5S are sim unlocked ).

Im guessing you have Verizon. All the Verizon iPhones are SIM unlocked.
