first, i am completely happy with SL, but i need iAuthor for an upcoming project, and it requires Lion.

my mac air:
purchased feb/2011
4gig ram
intel core 2 duo
1.8 ghz

am i okay to upgrade to lion? i've been reading a ton of opposing views and i'm just not sure if i should "risk" the troubles of lion for just one program.

Lion will work on your computer just fine.

However, most people agree that battery life and speed suffer a bit with Lion compared to SL. That being said, I would avoid installing it unless there is no other option.

Run Lion in a virtual machine and that's it...
You won't affect your current system in any way and everyone is happy.

i've been looking at virtual box to set up a vm, but with so little experience in doing this it concerns me that i may do more harm than good :)

I don't see why Lion would not run, you might also wait another week and install Mountain Lion instead.

I had that same Air model purchased at the exact same time. I upgraded to Lion that summer and it was fine on that computer. However, there was one thing that seemed worse: waking from sleep took a noticeable few seconds to get wifi to connect and to get a workable mouse cursor.

I just recently sold that Air to buy a new 2012 version and before the sale I restored back to SL that it shipped with. The sleep waking problem was totally fixed and responded within 1sec or less upon opening the lid.

Other than that one issue, Lion seemed to run just fine on the 2010 Air.
