I have a g5 PPC with the original airport card. I also have a 2012 Mac mini and airport extreme. It seems I read somewhere a local area network can only be as fast as its slowest connection?. Is my outdated g5 airport card affecting my wifi network speed ?

Your G5 is G while the Mini is n, G is 54 Mb/s, n is 150 Mb/s or 300 Mb/s dependable on how many antenna's it has, I think there also n 600 Mb/s.

Wikipedia has a good article on 802.11 x standards.

IEEE 802.11

Your internet speed will most likely not see any improvement if you don't have an extremely fast Internet package, needs to be more than 20-30 Mb/s to see G struggle on it.

Thanks, I have 6 MB dsl, dumped media com cable 15 mb service because of packet loss issues that they could not address. My 6mb without packet loss is as good or better than the 15mb service with packet loss.
