Hello. I have a six year old flat panel G4 iMac (bought used two years ago). When I try to boot up, the fan spins around and then stops. I can smell something, like burning oil perhaps. I do not hear any clicking or grinding noises, and there is no start up chime. When I opened the case, it was full of dust bunnies. I'm thinking it might be the power supply, or perhaps an electrical problem caused by the dust.
Does anyone think it might be the hard drive instead? Can anyone recommend an external IDE enclosure for an 80GB ATA/IDE, 3.5 inch, 7200rpm Hitachi hard drive? What kind of computer do I need to hook up such an enclosure? Would it work on a new PC netbook or a ten year old apple laptop?
I would very much appreciate any trouble-shooting tips you can give me. I've already tried to put a new 320GB eide hard drive in the iMac with no luck. I thought the size might be okay since I have a 1 GHz processor, but maybe I ran into trouble with the 137GB threshold anyway or maybe the problem cannot be solved with a new hard drive. Eeek! Please advise. Thank you!
