This may sound like a funny question, but how can I bee 100% certain that my external HDD is encrypted?

I have 10.8.5 and used FileVault2 to do a full-disk encryption, but would like some reassurance that I didn't screw things up and that my external HDD can't be hacked into.

It would be a shame to think I am secure when I am not!

Thanks,

Larry

Several methods that should show your encryption.

Open Disk Utility, and select your external hard drive, then open the Info window in Disk Utility. Should show in the list "Encrypted: Yes"
Connect your drive to some other Mac. Won't mount without the passphrase.

If I see "Encrypted Logical Partition" in Disk Utility, and it won't mount if I don't enter the correct password, that someone (e.g. NSA) could still get into my external clone?

Just want to be doubly sure that I encrypted my backup clone properly.

No - if it is encrypted, then you have done well.
That is, File Vault did that for you.
If you are a person of interest to one of those 3-letter agencies - then all bets are off.
(Try not to be paranoid about that, as it will likely take a few hundred years of computer time to recover your encryption key :D )

Well, after the San Bernardino and Apple incident, I am definitely paranoid about protecting what is on my MacBook.

And after the news yesterday, it seems like nothing is safe from the government anymore?!
