Is my iPhone 4S defective?

I've never owned an iPhone before, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Whenever I play a song (or a ringtone, for that matter), no sound comes out of the bottom-left speaker. If I cover the bottom-right speaker with my finger, all sound is muted. Is the bottom-left speaker broken? Is it even a speaker?

I already have a hairline scratch running up/down the phone, so I wouldn't be opposed to a replacement

The bottom left is a mic, not speaker.

If you look on the apple website it is clearly not a speaker, it's a mic.

Damn people still dont know that the iPhone only has one speaker and the other is a mic?!
