Hi, I just bought an iphone which is supposed to be factory unlocked. But my friend told me that it could be a jailbroken sold as unlocked. I bought it from a local phone dealer. How do I make sure that its originally unlocked?

A 4S cannot be unlocked by softare such as a JB.
Only by an official unlock or a gevey sim adapter.
If it accepts any sim and doesnt have any additional hardware in the sim tray then its factory unlocked.
Your friend is clueless.

Thanks for replying. But if I go to Preferences > General > About > Carrier, it says Carrier 12.0. What does this mean?

That has nothing to do wether its carrier unlocked on not.
Try a few different companies sims. Then you will know for sure.
Or put the imei number in one of the many websites that will tell you if its carrier unlocked or not.
