Before anyone can give you their thought, I think you should give them additional information about your phone,

Which phone do you have? 3GS or Iphone 4
What firmware version on it?
What baseband on it?
Which redsn0w version did you use?

You listed above that you are now on 5.0.1, your phone baseband is 01.59.00 and you used latest redsn0w 0.9.10b1 to jailbreak, then you should have untethered jailbreak.

if you want to make sure, reboot your phone and it should start back up normally.

If you want to keep your jailbreak/unlocked status, don't update the latest firmware in Itunes when the next one come out.

If he unlocked the phone already meaning that he has install Ultrasn0w which contain mobilsubstrate. If it is tethered, the phone won't even boot up pass the apple logo :D

CBillups1, if you're new to jailbreaking & unlocking, the above is worth repeating.

I've never been an unlocker, but strictly from the aspect of jailbreaking, DO NOT update your iOS firmware through iTunes when Apple releases an update unless you're sure-for-sure that there's been an untethered jailbreak released for that new version. If you update right away, you likely won't harm your phone, but you will lose your jailbreak and be at the mercy of the stock iOS until a jailbreak is released ...which in the case of 5/5.0.1 took months.

You're free to sync via iTunes like normal, just don't update.

im not a noob with unlocking but never knew what tethered and untethered was.

i jailbroke and unlock a 3G, 3GS, and the 4. but the 4 was the easiest since all i had to do was use jailbreakme.com

now yesterday was a challenge for me since i never did it and had to preserve my baseband and thanks to a fellow board member who helped me out greatly i did alright and it was a success.

Just turn off your device.

IF IT TURNS AND COMES BACK TO HOMESCREEN

=UNTETHERED

IF IT"S STUCK ON APPLE LOGO

=TETHERED

This is not 100% correct.

Even you have tethered jailbreak, you jailbreak your device but did not install any package yet, the phone still boot up normally to screen as long as you do not install anything with mobilsubstrate. Once mobilsubstrate is installed, it will hang.

That the reason we have so many newbie asking that why they jailbreak their device, it boot up normally to screen and see Cydia Icon on it. Because it is newly jailbroken and nothing has been installed.

guess its untethered lol turned off the phone and turned it back on and tmobile loaded up on top and cydia opened.:D
