Hello

A pop up on my imac advised that another computer was using my IP address and that I should try later to access the internet?

Does this mean I've been hacked? Or is it nothing to worry about?

I'm connected by wifi to my router at home and have now turned wifi off and sending this message via ipad

Your advice will be warmly appreciated by a novice

Thank you

Does the message look like this?

If so, then you don't need to worry. Your Mac has sensed that there is another device in your house (iPad, smartphone) that is using the same IP address as itself to connect to the router. There are a couple of things you can do; one of them is to turn AirPort on your iMac off, then on.

(Under certain circumstances, the iMac itself could have the IP address, and the router is erroneously indicating it as already being in use. Kinda weird, I know.)

Yes, that's what the popup looked like.

Thank you for putting my mind at rest, very grateful to you

Paranoia safely tucked away for later

best wishes
