is my mac pro 3,1 sound card toast?

I have noticed on both my external speakers and 2 different sets of earbuds trying both the front headphone port and the rear audio out port that I am getting a lot of audio distortion. I tried plugging an external DAC into my optical out and I get the same results. I guess this means my built in sound card in my mac pro is toast. Anyone else encounter this kind of thing?

have you tried different apps and volume levels (or even a different install).
some apps will distort audio if volume is to high (like vlc)
