This morning I was hearing what sounded like distant drops from a yard sprinkler landing outside my patio window. Instead, I discovered that this kind of soft, random crackling/popping sound was coming from my TrendNet 4-port Ethernet router. I unplugged the router, and the noise stopped.Plugged it back in, and now it's silent. The power plug felt pretty warm, but maybe that's normal.

So what was I hearing, do you think? Internal electrical arcing? Is this router now a fire hazard? It's working normally at the moment, but maybe it has to "warm up" again before I'll hear a recurrence....

Probably a bad power supply. If you can,try with another a couple of days.

It's several years old, and i think the cheap plastic finally took more heat than it could stand. I'm swapping it out with a Netgear ProSAFE model that has a metal case, which hopefully will do a better job of dissipating heat.

P.S. I should have said "Switch," not "router."
