Is my screen defective?

I have a 16GB iPhone 3G and am known to be a little bit of a perfectionist too.

Basically, my issue is this: my screen display does not fill up the entire viewing space in the display area. These "blank" display regions form a portrait around the display area and are particularly noticeable in direct light.

Is this normal? Or is this just me? I tend to think its the latter.
