Hey guys. I got a notification this evening that my Time Machine failed to backup. I tried to checkout what was going on to find that the drive showed up in Disk Utility greyed out. I ran First Aid, and this is what the output was....

Repairing file system.
Volume is already unmounted.
Performing fsck_hfs -fy -x /dev/rdisk3s2
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
The volume iMac Backup could not be verified completely.
File system check exit code is 8.
Restoring the original state found as unmounted.
File system verify or repair failed.
Operation failed…

So is the drive toast? It is only a few years old.

As a last-ditch effort, you could try erasing it with Disk Utility, then start over (it's a backup drive, not your source material).

My (opinionated) advice:
Avoid buying Seagate drives in the future... (sigh)
