Recently I rewired my computer system in order to store movies on an external hard drive. I have spent the last several days ripping & encoding Blu-rays and transferring files back and forth over my network. However, I am suddenly having connection issues with both my cable Internet and sometimes even my Wifi network.

My setup:
Macbook Air (mid-2011) <--WIRELESS--> Time Capsule 1st Gen <--WIRED--> USB 2.0 external HD & Cable modem

My problems:
Possibly correlated to my usage of Handbrake (low RAM) and/or transfers of large files (~10GB), my Internet appears to go down. Sometimes resetting my modem & Time Capsule resolves the problem; sometimes it does not. Perhaps more unsettling, my entire network has even gone down and Time Capsule cannot be recognized.

In sum, my entire network has gotten very unreliable and I'm not sure why. Any thoughts?
