You are putting your phone, into a metal box most likely in the middle of a building probably made of cement or cement block (I'm assuming by Locker, you are either at a fitness gym or high school which either way are generally cement based buildings).

So yes.... you could very easily lose service.

Exactly. Just put it in airplane mode before sticking it in your locker.
 
You may or may not lose service, but it will definitely attenuate the signal - making the phone "crank up" the radio power to compensate. So good plan to go into Airplane Mode before you put it in the locker.
 
If you put a cellphone in a Faraday cage, it will burn up battery trying to reach a tower due to the metal enclosure significantly blocking the radio signals.

A metal locker will likely do a pretty good impression of a Faraday cage.
