I dislike windows updates. It keeps nagging to restart ever so often, which I postpone for good reason. And it updates during the most awful times, without my consent.

My question is: is osx this annoying with updates?

OS X is somewhat similar, but you can disable auto updates if you want and just check manually.

Here is the settings screen in System Preferences.

The only thing in creation more annoying than Windows updates is signing for a Microsoft 'Account' - like volunteering to wear a strait jacket with an itchy lining..

Grateful thanks to Weaselboy for a very constructive advisory.

The biggest difference you would notice is there are far less OS-X updates that require a restart. A lot can be changed within the OS on the fly.
