I have an iMac 5K 27" that I originally with 2x4GB RAM from Apple and I added 2x8GB from OWC. However, I have been having kernel panics so I asked OWC to ship replacement RAM.

The new RAM modules they sent clearly has a Crucial sticker on it that they just slapped an OWC sticker over. The RAM itself also looks different (green in color, not like the dark blue RAM originally delivered).

Anyone have a similar experience? Is OWC simply reselling Crucial RAM? Or maybe they sent me refurbished Crucial RAM to replace my defective OWC RAM?

I think you better ask OWC if they send you something that not the same as your order?

Anyway, I am quite sure OWC is just a marketing company, they didn't make anything on their own. Even the black RAM stick with their own sticker on it may be also made by Crucial, but just OEM in different colour / layout, and OWC sticker on it.

Thanks, I did also email them with a photo and asked what happened but haven't heard back yet. It seems very odd that the replacement for my order would include RAM that not only looks different but it clearly Crucial RAM that's been relabelled. I'm just curious if others have experienced the same since OWC is often recommended in these forums.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that OWC has anything to do with Crucial (which is owned by Micron, I think).

If the RAM you have now works (as distinguished from the previous RAM that didn't), I wouldn't worry about the label on it...

OWC doesn't make any RAM of their own, but they aren't Crucial. Vendors like OWC buy RAM as commodities so they will switch vendors from time to time. Even Apple does this with their computers that still have replaceable RAM.

Thanks for the replies. I'm attaching an image to show exactly what I mean. RAM on the bottom was from the original OWC order, the top replacement RAM still in package is what I'm concerned about. Notice how it looks different and has two stickers. Note: I smudged out the serial numbers, not sure if those are important.

This is no reason for concern. If there's a problem in the future, OWC will handle it regardless. Crucial RAM is very reliable, and "refurbished RAM" isn't something that exists.

Crucial RAM is excellent, reliable and well priced, if you had asked here many people would have recommended it so I would just be glad that's what you got unless you can send it back and get it cheaper on Amazon which is highly likely, in which case I'd do that.

I think quality should not be a problem. However, the problem is that OWC RAM generally not considered well priced, which is what OP paid for.

If the OWC RAM is actually cheaper than Crucial, that's a good news for OP. But if OWC is more expensive, then OP is paying for the sticker and the OWC package. That's doesn't sounds good.

Exactly what I said surely???
