Is "resetting" via the iPhone and "restoring" via iTunes the same thing?

So I'm trying to restore my iPhone in iTunes but it wants to do some update first that is apparantly going to take two hours. Sounds insane.

Was wondering if I just go into settings on the phone and choose the erase all data and settings option or whatever it is if that is the same thing?

They're not the same. Erase all content will still require a restore. Just do the restore.
