What's wrong with that way? It seems pretty straightforward to me. Just select "Connect to server" under the "Go" menu in Finder and put in the address. I'm not sure of any other ways to connect.
 
There are multiple alternative ways, although they may be close to equivalent. ;)

1) You should see Windows PCs in Network in Finder provided that the Mac is set to latch to the same "workgroup" as the PCs. The workgroup can be changed by running /applications/utilities/directory access, double clicking on SMB/CIFS in the Services tab, and entering in the value you want.

2) You could install Bonjour for Windows on the Windows computers and then use that for zero-configuration connections.

You can browse the networked volumes visually and then double-click on the one that you want.
