Is SoftRAID critical after initial setup ?

I bought a Thunderbay-4 and didn't catch that SoftRAID wasn't a perpetual license so just got a surprise notice that my trial period is up and I need to pay $119 to buy it (feels kind of like ransomware). How critical is it if things are setup and working?
