I had the 3 cellular version years ago. It wound up in a drawer and eventually just disintegrated. I gave up trying to use APPs that stunk, or were too much hassle to get to work, and then there was the worry that the thing might not stay dry if I used it to help me count swimming laps. Then, there's tracking walks. Nothing seemed to really 'work' well.

Has Apple improved on any of these fronts? I've seen people having troule finding the water lock icon, people spending all of that money for the Ultra only to have the waterproofing fail, and so forth.

I actually tried to buy a recent model, maybe a 6 or 7, some years ago and it 'felt' like a lot of work just to get the thing started. Reminded me of the 3, so I sent it back. Even the return was a nightmare, bc I bought from Bezos, which was a mistake I won't make again....

I'm trying to track my golf walks, maybe find a good yardage APP to give me basic yardages, and track my swimming. Is the thing even waterproof? Or, does Apple still have that fine print language that leaves us DOA if the seals don't work? (I remember reading about that ehre too.)

Really want to be talked into buying one. Just getting old, and tired, so it's just not the same Apple love as in the old days. A byproduct of the supply chain guy's inheritance watering down Apple's creative juices (sorry, I know we are only supposed to sing songs of praise for Cook...).

I'm on a AW6 and i've tracked loads of walks with the built in Apple Workouts app with no issues plus i've worn it for swimming loads over the years and also worn it while canoeing down a river in France a couple of times with no issues. No hint of any issues such as water damage plus the workouts app can track swimming working out the length of the pool etc as you go. I usually give it a rinse off by wearing it in the shower post swim but nothing more.

The water lock feature is not difficult to find, single press of the bigger side button and its in control centre to turn on, but its not something you have to turn on or the watch implodes when it touches water! Some people get confused and think they have to turn it on to make the watch waterproof which isnt the case. All it does is lock the screen from inadvertent ghost touches caused by water droplets which could interrupt tracking an activity etc. The watch is waterproof out of the box by nature of how its engineered and built.

Not sure on the Golf front as i'm not a golfist, the hitting of the ball then finding it part tends to get in the way of a nice walk, but there seems to be loads of different apps that do what you want so sure someone can recommend something.

For what its worth i've got two nice dumb watches as such that havent been out of the drawer since i got my Apple Watch a few years ago. Other half got one on after seeing mine and she now uses it to track all manner of exercise from dog walks to spinning classes to exercise classes and if she can use it anyone can. I had to set it up for her but its hardly a chore to be honest and once done you can set up a watch face as you want it and be done, use a standard one or if you so desire fiddle to your hearts content to set up watch faces as you want them, different faces for different thinghs etc. For example i used to have one general face i used most of the time but then one for work which had my work calendar etc on it. I had it automated via shortcuts to change from the general to the work one before i started work at 8am and then just after 4:30pm when i finish it went back to my other one.
