My 2009 13" MBP is slowly deteriorating, despite me putting a new Samsung SSD in it about 3-4 years ago. I read an article recently about how the 2012-2015 MBPs were supposedly the best ever made, and after reading the article, I find it hard to disagree.

I don't do any hardcore gaming or video or music making/editing. I mainly use it for internet browsing, word processing, and sometimes burning CDs.

Of course, I want to stick with Mac because I prefer it to PC. Is this model still a good buy or should I opt for the newer ones?

IMHO if your budget allows it, get the latest MBP. If not, a 2015 model would still be a good buy as it will be supported beyond 2020. I’m running a 2012 i5 13” MBP. I’m running the latest Mac OS & it’s still not bogging as its packed with 16gb of ram

I have the 2015 15" MBP and I love it. However, after more than 2 years, it's starting to show it's age. I'm a full-time songwriter so I use it just for Logic Pro (and some graphics stuff like After Effects, Final Cut and Photoshop) – and I really use it all the time. Nonstop. The flash drive is unbelievably fast and it is a very powerful machine, indeed. I like all the ports it has, especially the SD-card reader.

Nonetheless, I personally would ALWAYS buy the latest MBP. Always. Just because they are the latest models. They are a tiny bit faster (in graphics performance even more so), thinner, better and more display, Touch Bar, etc. Actually 2015 MBP are an old design. If I wouldn't have bought this MBP two years ago and still cling onto my 2010 MBP I would get a 2017 MBP in a heartbeat and not even care about the 2015 MBP. I exchange my laptops every 5 years so it will be 2020 again for me. And then I will of course buy the latest model.

As you said, you would not use it for pro applications, well then I can tell you it is still a workhorse power machine. Get it, however, if you got the budget, get the latest.
