Is the 5Gbps enough to drive a (future) 3rd party egpu?

In theory, I guess. Bandwidth should be enough for 1-lane PCIe, but I've not heard of a standard that does such over USB3 (disclaimer: Not actually hardware engineer).
There have been precedents at least, but I wouldn't count on it. This looks like a custom-engineered solution. And if there ever is one, it won't be the sharpest knive in the drawer and probably very expensive.
