....from the iPhone body that it's looking hideous and only with a case does it look ok? I mean I keep looking at the phones and it's really out there and just doesn't look that appeasing anymore.

It’s iconic though, the 3 camera layout you know it’s an iPhone Pro.

I personally don’t mind it, I look at the front of the phone anyway.

It is a bit ridiculous isn’t it…

It definitely looks a bit strange to keep the array crammed into a corner now it takes up over half the width of the phone on the 6.1" model, I guess iconic is one way of putting it, but there are probably more balanced ways of arranging the lenses. If this is what's needed to fit the decent camera system though, hardware features rightly come first.

I wouldn’t mine the actual phone being a bit thicker for better features/battery and to offset the huge camera bump personally …and now with titanium, thicker would be a plus as currently it has become more fragile….

Didn’t the thickness of the phone actually include camera at one time? What year did that go away?

Wow what a bump though. this is what you call top heavy

The camera set-up does not bother me at all. May be bothering for some. If it bothers, maybe other products have better set-up to fit someone’s preference.

It's ugly as f... some people will be drooling over it, because it's iPhone, and ""Pro"". Personally I don't care much about it's aesthetics. Bigger cameras mean bigger sensor/brighter lens, which equals better photos/videos, and that's what matters for me. But it is ugly.

My 12 non pro would lay flat with a case on. With the 15 pro, even with a case, it bumps out. Not a huge deal. Worth it for the increase in camera quality in my opinion.

But why not with titanium make it a shade thicker? Not getting that as it would have helped in many design and feature ways….r&d department dropped the ball on this one for sure. Just means some precious manufacturing methods carried over and wasn’t a complete new design.

I actually understand that. It's not comfortable to hold thick phones + adds weight. It's never a new design. Apple will tell you all new design in heartbeat and they made a 0.5mm curve on the frame. This thing looks the same in the past 4 years with ever increasing camera bump sizes.

Soon it’ll be even wider, in a diamond pattern. More lenses, and you can take spatial photo/video on both landscape and portrait orientation

Love it. Looks dead technical, like a sci fi gadget. Needs to get more crazy, not less!

There was no camera bump in iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5c, 5s, SE 2016... Did not own iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS...

iPhone 6 series from 2014 started the camera protruding from the back... For the 3 camera lens phones, iPhone 11 Pro series has the least protrusion...

Did not know that obtrusion and protrusion/obtruding and protruding nearly have the same meaning...

The bump thickness actually decreased this year, because the body thickness increased, and the overall thickness remained the same.

But otherwise yes, the bumps are ridiculous. And no, a case doesn’t really make it look ok. I much prefer the flush cameras of the pre-iPhone 6 era. They made good-enough pictures.

Don't like it? Don't buy it... Simple.
If only that were true. Unfortunately, it's not.

Many people hate the fugly camera boil that's been there since the iPhone 6 series. Many of them, myself included, continue to buy the iPhone.

Why, because unlike the simplicity of your mic-drop statement, you don't have to like something 100 percent in order to get it. People buy for other reasons. iOS being one reason (you can only get that on an iPhone), features being another (certain Apple services are only available on the iPhone). And for many other reasons.

The world is not black and white.

For the record…I hate the fugly camera boil and I own a 6 Plus, a 6s Plus and an 11 Pro Max, all of which I use caseless. But as much as I hate that, I like iOS more.

I rant about this all the time. The iPhone is literally a camera first now and secondary everything else. It’s a frustration that all phone manufacturers are causing by only worrying about who will buy the phones and not what they can innovate to make the device a true jack of all trades. LG had it right pushing for more quality audio and adding top notch DAVs to their phones, but alas these days narcissism prevails over nuanced hobbies.

At some point Apple went with it as part of their design style for the iPhone. I'd hardly call it iconic though as it's only been around since 2015 with the launch of the iPhone 6.

As to "I look at the front of the phone anyway", this is an old trope trotted out whenever anyone around here complains about the camera bump. While you may personally never look at the back of the phone, others do.

I would point out though, that if your back glass ever cracked or scratched - you'd know. Because I don't believe that trope is true.

It’s more that everything else is basically on-par now. The one thing that really could be improved every year is camera. Maybe battery life too, but that’s dependent on chemistry innovations, so less in the manufacturer’s control.

Screen, power, apps, both have decent and equal capabilities. Where else can they differentiate?

Just upgraded from 12 Pro to 15 Pro. It's definitely bigger! You really notice it if you set them down face-up on a surface... the 15 Pro has a pronounced "Lean" compared to the 12 Pro. And of course the lenses are considerably bigger in terms of area on the back.

That said - it's not really a bother to me. I notice it in comparison but not in everyday (well, one day) use. It still fits in the same pockets, it still "Feels" roughly the same holding it (I go naked) - 15 Pro feels a touch heavier; if it's lighter than the 14 Pro I guess I'm glad I waited. I'm expecting better photo quality but to be honest, the 12 Pro was "pretty good."

Not really if those are larger than 1-inch image sensors then that's a reasonable and expected size

Larger image sensor = better image quality when optics remain constant

Below are this year's 1-inch image sensor smartphones.

If Apple delivered those cameras on the A17 Pro iPhones it would push down any tepid news about the 3nm improvements.

Is there a point though?

At what megapixel count, feature ability do the camera enthusiasts at MacRumors say "It's enough?"

The iPhone is capable of pro photography and video. Movies have been made with the iPhone. But, aside from what people here like to do, is the average customer doing these things? Sure, this allows those who have a desire to be photographers and movie makers a tool in their toolbox, but are these people the average customer?

So at what point does Apple's differentiating no longer matter to the average customer who buys the phone? These are people that forget what model phone they have and primarily use it for social media, snapping pics on vacation and texting friends and family.

For myself, camera stopped being an issue in 2009 with my first smartphone. A large part of my pictures are trivial, meant to show my wife what product is on the shelf at the store so she can decide what she wants me to get her. I don't need to be able to take pictures like that in crystal clear quality from the core of Pluto. But I'm not the average customer either, or the average person.

But I think the average customer has been satisfied with the capability of the camera for some time now.

6.30 x 3.02 x 0.32 inches (159.9 x 76.7 x 8.25 mm) , thickness with camera 0.48 inches (12.28 mm)

curious to know why they dont list the total thickness of phone now at Apple instead of 3/4 specs....
