I inquired about getting one repaired on a first gen Touch a couple of months ago and was told that it was a non replaceable part and that the whole mainboard would need to be replaced at around $190USD so I bought a new Touch instead.

dammit! just as I feared.
I was googling for parts and saw none for the 1st gen... now I have to do component level repair.
