Hi,

My 2016 15-inch had the random popping noise since beginning. Few days back I got my keyboard replaced under the new program and they replaced the topcase - this made the popping noise worse.

I found out that the noise can be reproduced easily by just lightly pressing the screen at the very bottom from back to inward to the laptop - mainly in the middle area - it almost sounds like a creak. Or when the machine is a bit hot, you can lightly press the very bottom of the screen from front. This light press basically releases a tension somewhere which causes the noise - particularly when the machine becomes hot. This goes on cyclically. The way it can be reproduced, there's nothing much random about it now.

Another situation where the popping/creaking happens with a milder noise is when you're working on couch keeping the laptop on your lap at an angle - the hinge supported by your legs. The hinge gets a mild pressure from your thigh and that causes a mild popping noise every now and then.

I am planning to go back to the Genius Bar but can't really stay without the machine for another 10 days for their repair unless there's assurance this problem gets fixed after all.

So, has anyone had it fixed after repair by Apple?

And does the 2018 model have this too?

Yeah, it’s a known design issue - the glue under a plastic part in the bottom is partially detaching and the plastic itself is deforming, which makes the noise. It happens when the temperature changes. You can have them exchange the display, but it will probably come back...

So, is it a problem with the screen part itself and not the base? I am curious how did it get worsened after the topcase replacement...
