Is the iPad prone to scratches?

I currently use a screen protector but it squeaks when i use my stylus. As a student, it is very distracting especially when the rest of the class is silent. However, I would like to protect my iPad from even the tinieest scratches, microscratches since Id like to sell the iPad later. So if I remove the screen protector, will I face scratches?

I've been using mine without screen protector since launch day (iPad 3 BTW) and so far, zero scratches!

While I do use a smart cover with my iPad 2, there's no other screen protection.

And not a single scratch on this device, which is used daily and travels with me everywhere.
