Is the iPhone 5 just the 4GS?

I read that there was going to be a soft update, or 4GS, then a full upgrade this coming summer or whatever. What's the situation?

The 3G to 3GS upgrade was the biggest steps hardware wise for the iPhone.

All signs right now point to a faster A5 and different design.

Er, no. iPhone 5 would be iPhone 5, iPhone 4GS would be iPhone 4GS. iPhone 5 is not the same as 4GS.

I'm sure there will be many spec geeks who will complain it doesn't have the most ram, fastest processor, or biggest screen. They'll point to all of the devices that have a better spec in some area. They'll call it the 4S and bitch about it.

The rest of the world will probably just call it what Apple names it. iPhone 5. New iPhone. Cloud Thingie. or whatever they end up calling it.

Based on these strong rumors/facts, I doubt it will be a small upgrade:

- Stronger competition
- Elongated home button (gestures?)
- It's been a longer time between regular iPhone upgrades
- This is Apple's main source of revenue, they won't do a small upgrade this time around.

No one knows until it gets announced by Apple.
