I had an X for two years and it fell down only two times, I had it normally in a sleeve as I don't think cases look good. I got now the 11 and since apple promoted their durability, I was wondering if it would be "okay" to use the phone without any sleeve or case. I'm not clumsy, I take care of my stuff and I normally have my phone in the back pocket (and yes, the phone only, no keys, no coins). Still im a little afraid of the dust and stuff which naturally comes into a pocket, if this will scratch with them somehow the surface.
so my question (or discussion) is if you think it is "okay" to have it just in the pocket and Im to paranoid or do you have any other experience with this kind of situation?
Maybe somebody with expertise with this kind of material is here.

thx.

I never use a phone without a case because accidents can happen and unless you have AppleCare+, the cost to repair or replace the phone isn’t worth taking a chance. I’ve only dropped my X a couple times also but it only takes one perfect set of circumstances for a screen or worse yet, the back glass to crack..

I haven't dropped mine (I don't use a case) but if its at least as strong as my old XS, it'll be able to survive a few drops here and there. I will say that the display seems to accumulate scratches way easier than the previous model. My 11 Pro has tons of scratches along the bezels that go into the display already. I had one tiny one after a year of using the XS in the same way. About to make a form post about it?

I also use a sleeve, keep it clean and dust free. I change it every six months at £7 a pop. You will get dust and grit in your pockets or bag no matter what you do. If you keep a naked screen in your pocket you should expect some scratches.

Apples advert showing the iphone getting thrown around in a bag with keys etc is going to make people believe their iphone is indestructible. It's literally a glass sandwich and glass scratches fairly easily. As does the oleophobic coating.

:D that’s my thoughts exactly! That’s why I created that post, to see if I’m the only one.
Do you think it will get as dirty when I got a case on it? The Apple ones which are open on the bottom.

Exactly, and anyone who's ever been around children will agree. "hey buddy, hand Daddy his phone... OOPS, sorry Dad"

The old iPhones had an aluminum back. The new iPhones have a glass back. If you drop it on a hard surface, the likelihood of shattering one of the glass sides is higher than on the older phones.
Bottom line: the new iPhones are not as likely to survive a drop as the old aluminum iPhones

The new iPhones Pro’s are extremely tough. I am sure the iPhone 11 is super durable too!

The phone is more durable, but any drop can break it, just luck of the draw. As for scratching, probably zero difference than in the past, so not more durable in that regard.

Unless the claim is covered under warranty which is unlikely as with water resistance, it'll cost you only $399 for back glass and $199 for screen replacements.

My iPhone 6s+, 4 years later. No case. Been dropped multiple times, once on concrete from calf (leg) level (I was sitting in my car).

It always goes in a pocket by itself, is never laid down on a surface unless there is something under it or the surface is clean, and it has designated spots on my desk, couch or car - depending on where I am. Additionally, I have situational awareness as to where my iPhone is spatially when carrying/using it. It's used with two hands and cradled for protection in crowds or areas where it could be bumped from my hand (if not put away). Subconsciously my body/hands are always protecting it when moving about.

I imagine your 11, which should be tougher than my 6s+ will be fine.

Which is why with our kids, devices were placed out of reach and the kids were disciplined if they tried to take what was not theirs. Older devices that I didn't care about being damaged they were allowed to use, but only if they still took care of them. I'm not into allowing abuse just because an item is old.

My son has since proven he has learned the value of things and earned the iPhone SE he currently has (he's 15).

My daughter on the other hand still struggles (she's 11). She's still using an iPhone 5 and is not allowed to touch/use our iPads. The last iPad I trusted her too much and she put a dent in the side when she dropped it on the corner of a table.

She's allowed to use the old Android tablet though. It's plastic.

At least someone is picky as I am :D
I know what you mean, but my experience showed me that small scratches will come eventually due to dust and stuff =/

I gave up caring about scratches in 2009 with our first smarphones, HTC Touch Pros that had plastic screens. You had to use a stylus with them so they got scratched to hell and back.

Also, unlike a lot of people my phone is set down face up. If something is going to scratch I'm okay with it being the back.

The only scratches I care about are deep ones that are visible. I had one once with my old iPhone 5, but I had to hold it upside down in very strong sunlight in order to see it.

There are so many posts about this, and the answers are always mixed. I’ve decided that if a person is OK with taking the risk of getting scratches or cracks, and they’re willing to take it in to repair and spend the $$, then they should use the phone naked. If you’re NOT ok with shelling out $$ to repair and/or paying for AppleCare, then get a case and screen protector. Period! I don’t think the argument should go beyond that. 🙃

Guess I raise my kid wrong then, thanks for the parenting lesson. Seriously though my point being that accidents do happen. That's why they're called accidents.

I didn't say that. I just mentioned what we do/did in order to mitigate problems. I am just not cool with other people (including my own kids) handling my stuff. Neither is my wife.

As far as accidents - yes that's so. But so many accidents happen because people don't think ahead about what could happen and take precautionary action.

My mom made the same argument about accidents to me a few years ago - after my dad lost a finger to his power saw because he wasn't thinking ahead.

You just have to understand that the results of each and every drop can be different, it's just a crap shoot. Personally I will never carry a phone without a case, I like the grip of a case and the risk without is just not worth it. However, I don't invest money in screen savers. I've had experience with kids and cell phones via my grand kids. It frustrates me to see some kids treat their cell phones so casually, however, even if they are very careful with their phone they can't always protect it from other kids who will grab it or will bump them while they are trying to use theirs. Stuff happens.

I had the same thinking. Went for years without an incident then fell asleep, the phone slipped off the bed and unluckily landed glass down on an unplugged power plug so it developed an ugly scratch on the more visible part of screen.

Every time I had a drop it was because I was not paying attention. The one that happened on concrete when I was in the car was embarrassing though because my wife was sitting next to me. She held her tongue but had the screen cracked I'd have been read the riot act about not being careful. :(

Anything can break or be damaged if it’s drop at a particular angle etc or it could not break if it’s dropped at a particular. So drop test mean nothing to me.
Out of the 8 iPhones I’ve had going back to the original iPhone to the
Pro Max I’ve never cracked a screen and I’ve dropped all of them on occasion.

I have friends that crack every iPhone screen they get and cracked the glass on the back on the models that have had glass backs.

I always use a case and a screen protector that may help I guess. I just believe in protecting the investment.

I still have the original iPhone and it’s been in and out of drawers with whatever on top of it for over 10 years and the screen is pristine. The aluminum back is beat to hell though.

My daughter was given my wife's old iPhone 5 earlier this year. It's her first phone and she got it because with my new job it meant we needed to be able to get a hold of her now.

She lost the phone the very first day she got it. Classmate 'borrowed' it and when she asked for it back he refused to return it and instead took it home with him. She didn't fight for it because he would have crushed her so she sat on it for three days before telling the principal.

Fortunately, the principal was able to get the phone back (took a month) and the kid was suspended for a week. But the SIM card I had for it was gone. Had to replace that.

She has been explicitly told now though "No sharing!"
