I just bought a 2017 12” MacBook with the i5/8GB/512. I had two MacBook pros in the past but right now doesn’t seem like a good time to actually buy something new from Apple. I don’t see much value in the current models. Everything is a generation behind but they still want tomorrow’s prices. Without a new design and the latest gen CPU’s I decided to go the other direction and get the smallest/lightest I could and managed to pick it up refurbished for $700.00.

I’ve never owned a 12” but I travel non-stop and basically just wanted something super portable that handles daily tasks like safari, Spotify, VLC, Word and that’s about it. I’ve seen where with the 12” MacBook you can get any OS dating back to Maverick so I’m wondering for this machine if the latest OS is the greatest. Is it optimized well or does it run slower or demand more than in the past?

Normally, whatever OS comes with a new system is the lowest you can go. The firmware and drivers are optimized for the macOS you have now. Where did you see you can go back to Mavericks with a 2017 MacBook?

For instance, I can downgrade to Mavericks with my late 2013 13" MacBook Pro; that's the macOS my MBP was shipped with. I couldn't downgrade to Snow Leopard, for instance.
