I am using a MacBook Pro 15inch late 2013, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB memory.
On running dianostics: e.g. Application/disk utilities it tell me that a restore is necessary.
So I used "command + R" and checked my disk (Macintosh HD) using "first aid". I saw that there is a "restore" function but when I click on that it gives me restore from "OS X Base system" I see that the disk image is very small compared to my true Macintosh HD (388 GB in use of a 500 SDD). My question is: Is it safe to use that "OS X Base system" image without loosing all my apps and data? I tried contacting Apple Support last night by chat but my call was not taken.

Thanking you

Sorry about the Japanese but hopefully you can make some sense out of the attached file.

That won't work. That is the recovery volume you are seeing there.

You need to do two things, first go to Internet recovery using command-option-r at boot and fix the disk using first aid. Then you need to reinstall the OS (not restore).

But I doubt seriously whether this will work as I suspect you have a failed drive there. The OS just does not up and disappear all on its own.

Thank you for at least putting my mind at rest. Would have been disastrous then. I have made an appointment at the Mac repair tomorrow afternoon so heres hoping that it works out ok. If it is the drive then it is a good time to be upgrading from 500SDD anyway. Although that will be a hefty price to pay.

Once again, many thanks.
