Are there AirPrint compatible multifunction printers that also have fax functionality? Yes, I've seen a few by HP.
How do they work? Like any other fax machine. You plug a phone line in and scan to fax.
If you want to fax without a phone connection you'll have to use a service like eFax. (Hint: it's not free.) In that case, it doesn't matter whether the printer is "capable" of faxing or not.

HP 8600 plus all-in-one has AirPrint, scan, copy, and fax (traditional fax). Costco is actually carrying one right now with a 75 dollar coupon. It's 174.99 right now at my costco location because of that coupon.
