Carrier Is there a difference between unlocked or ATT locked iPhone

My contract is up in December with ATT, meaning I can get a new phone for 199. I've,always waited for that. I have an unlimited plan so I'm not getting rid of that, but I want to buy 4.7 iPhone 6 in September if they come out then. Since I'm using the ATT network, my question: is there a benefit using an ATT Locked phone on the ATT network? If not, I'm going to buy, at full price, an unlocked phone and use it on my ATT account.

This thought goes back a few years. I was told by a salesperson that you wouldn't get the full speeds of the data connection offered unless using that carriers device. That was pure sales hype, but didn't know enough about data connectivity at the time, so I swallowed the pitch.
